Summary of DuPont claims re ALTRISET Termite Product:
The termite control specialist applies Altriset in targeted areas.
The first wave of termites to come into contact with Altriset walk through it, ingest it and carry it on their bodies. They cannot taste or smell it.
Within several hours, the mouths of exposed termites become paralyzed to stop further feeding.
Exposed termites experience increased grooming and interaction so that they spread Altriset among other colony members.
Over time, termites become more lethargic and show signs of muscle paralysis.
Altriset eliminates the termites in three months or less when used in accordance with the label.
DuPont ALTRISET - Unique Innovative Termiticide
ALTRISET Termite Control Product was released in USA in November 2010 and recently into Australia (September 2011). It reportedly cost DuPont more than $250 million in research and registration costs to bring it to the USA Termite Control market.
Based upon DuPont claims the EPA Pesticide Label Registrations, and other expert commentary, the product appears to have excellent subterranean termite control properties and favourable health, safety and environmental profile.

Termidor Transfer Effect
Unique Mode of Action: ALTRISET is the first termiticide product with an active ingredient from the anthranilic diamide class of chemistry. Developed by DuPont USA from research over a ten year period into insecticidal properties of substances found in bark of trees and shrubs of the Ryania genus.
Mimicking these natural substances is an important innovation in termite control. As a result Altriset has a very low impact on the environment, including mammals, birds, bees, fish and other animals.
Unique Safety Profile: Altriset is the first and only soil treatment termiticide to be classified by EPA in USA as a Reduced-Risk Pesticide. It is deemed safe enough to have no requirement to note WARNING or CAUTION on the pesticide label.
NO specific FIRST AID required as on other termiticide labels. Even if the product is splashed in someone's eyes the EPA and AVPMA do not require or recommend any first aid procedures. No mandatory need to rinse eyes, rinse skin or call a poison control centre. No protective equipment gloves or eyewear need be worn by the pesticide applicator who may work with this product on a daily basis.
Active constituent: Calteryx [scientific name chlorantraniliprole] readily binds to the receptors in the termite's muscle tissues and depletes calcium therein needed for muscle contraction. With sufficient dosage - the resulting paralysis leads to the death of the termite - see illustration below:

Picture on left: RED illustrates where ALTRISET Calterx has been ingested or in contact with the termite's mouthparts legs and body.
DuPont claims the mouths of exposed termites become paralyzed and so stop feeding. There is increased grooming and interaction with other termites within days, spreading even more Altriset onto other members of the colony. Over time, affected termites become more lethargic, are paralyzed and then die. Altriset eliminates termites from structures in less than 3 months when used in accordance with the Pesticide Label.
A single Altriset application can provide subterranean termite protection "for 5 years" applied in accordance with Pesticide Label.
DuPont claims field testing of Altriset in USA of more than 5 years show 100% effectiveness of an Altriset soil treated barrier against termites. The longevity test sites are ongoing.
ALTRISET Application - Soil Treatment Barrier
Altriset is applied to the soil abutting the perimeter of a building in order to protect the building from subterranean termite infestation.
Termites that are present in the timbers of the building must return to their colony nest. When they come into contact with Altriset treated soil they walk through it, ingest it and carry it on their bodies. They cannot taste or smell it. Within a few hours, the mouths of exposed termites become paralyzed and stop further feeding. With sufficient dosage they become paralyzed and die.
Termites that tunnel through the Altriset treated soil can quickly acquire a lethal dose of Altriset. These termites will continue to crawl, groom, and clean for extended periods after exposure.
Trench and Treat
Crawl Spaces foundation wall
Planter boxes or other parts
Trench and treat soil around external concrete slab edge
Trench and treat soil around walls and piers in the sub-floor area
Treatment of soil along and around the external perimeter
Treat cracks, expansion joints
Pipes and utility lines
Soils beneath porches
Drill concrete floor along expansion joints and cracks, and treat soil thereunder
Drill concrete floor around pipes and treat soil thereunder
Drill concrete patio areas and treat soil area therein - a high risk termite nest location
ALTRISET vs TERMIDOR
How does Altriset (DuPont) compare with Termidor (BASF)? the existing leading product in USA. REMEMBER all termiticides used as a soil treatment will degrade over time due to environmental factors and effect of micro bacterial processes in the soil.
According to DuPont USA laboratory and fieldwork studies (1) almost 60% of the Altriset chemical remains active even after 5 years in a pre-construction new home situation whereas 10% of Termidor remains active after the same amount of time (2) after 1 year in a post-construction existing home situation more than 80% of the Altriset chemical remains active compared with 70% for Termidor.
Both are leading termite control products that exhibit a transfer effect, in that the affected termites do not die immediately upon contact with the termiticide. Termidor is proven by more than 10 years of use in USA to be a highly effective termite control product.
Altriset has a safer profile as the only termiticide for soil barrier application that is classified by the EPA (USA) as a Reduced-Risk Pesticide - a creditable strong endorsement by the EPA as to the safety of the product to people and pets.
Termidor carries a CAUTION on the pesticide label in USA and is highly active against a variety of non-target animals such as bees and fish. Altriset has a lower toxicity profile towards children and pets - it is not debilitating to bees, fish and earthworms.

DONT RISK IT ... Leave it to the Professionals
termite-control-expert Remember effective termite control and installation of complete soil treatment barrier depends heavily upon the skill and experience of the termite controller.
Professional termite controllers are familar with local building construction types - posess and use of specialized equipment, such as concrete drills - bulk spray tanks, pumps and termiticide applicating and injection equipment.
WARNING Altriset is more expensive than most of the alternatives, so BEWARE of "dodgy" companies that under cut the required application rate in order to cut costs, which will lower the level of protection required.
